Remember how good it felt every time your parents were proud of you? Every time you did something that made them proud to be your parents?
Did it make you feel more confident, happy, alive, excited, and most of all motivated to continue to do your best? I bet you it did.
Were you luck enough to have that kind of experience as a child? Not everyone does. And that is very sad.
Sometimes life can get so hectic, so crazy that we might forget to show our kids just how wonderful they are. We tend to put them on the back burner while we deal with our day to day stuff, just to get by.
What does that do to them?
Lately I’ve been finding myself doing just that to my own two beautiful children. Mommy is just too busy, trying to get all her stuff done, that they are being ignored, and that is an awful feeling. It’s a wake up call, and that’s why I wanted to write to you today about how incredibly important it is to show our children that they really do come first. To put stop what we are in the middle of to answer their questions. To go running to them to see what’s wrong when they cry out in pain after a fall.
To give them kisses and hugs and just that special look that makes them say, “Oh Mommy, stop that!” while their eyes are rolling in disgust. But they do love it. You loved it too if you were lucky enough to have those special moments with your own parents.
Did you know that by not only believing in your child, but really showing them how much you believe in them, truly believe in their own abilities, their own intelligence and creativity that it can have a massive impact on their financial futures as well?
If they grow up feeling unworthy, then even if later in life they do well financially, at some point they will find a way to sabotage their own success just to prove to themselves that they are not worthy of that success.
Crazy right? Unbelievable. But true. Really true. Just look around, look at those who are truly a financial success. They are confident, they believe in themselves.
Then look at those who were temporarily successful and then failed and were never able to achieve success again, they don’t feel worthy, they may even be deeply depressed.
That actually happens to a lot of lottery winners. They buy lottery tickets hoping that maybe they’ll get lucky. That just maybe they are worthy of winning, but they already don’t have faith in themselves. They prove that by letting fate decide their fortune rather than going after what they want and working hard, or working wisely to achieve their dreams because they really believe in themselves. Sure, they might win the lottery, but the odds are against them, not only winning but keeping their winnings. Just look at the statistics.
But what can we do? How can we make sure that our children have a better chance at achieving and maintaining financial success?
By growing their self-worth.
Here are a few small, simple, but oh so effective ways to help your child create that successful, happy, fulfilling financial future that you truly want for them.
1. Tell them you love them every single day, as often as possible. And really mean it.
2. Look into their eyes, give them 100% of your focus whenever you speak to them or listen to them. Show them that they are worthy of your precious time. (Put down the phone, close or put the computer to sleep.)
3. Encourage their crazy ideas. Never tell them anything is impossible, ask them how they can make their ideas possible. Get them thinking, solving their own answers. (The same is true for money. Don’t tell they that you can’t afford something they want, ask them how they can afford it. Get them to come up with ways they could earn the money. Get them to think outside the box.)
Show your child that you believe in them by taking their ideas seriously and giving them the attention they deserve.
This doesn’t mean you have to ignore all the tasks you need to accomplish. This means being honest with them. Letting them know that Mommy needs to get her work done so she can pay the bills but make sure they know that they come first. Always.
We know they do. Of course they do! They are our babies, they will always come first for us. The key is to make sure that they know it too!
I hope you found this helpful. I learn every day from my own children and my own experiences, and if I can help just one other person then my work is complete.
Thank-you for taking the time to read this. I hope you will take it to heart and make the most of it. Here’s to both your success and your child’s!
