Teaching Your Child the 3 R's (Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic)
by Using Money Without it Costing You One Single Cent?
by Amanda van der Gulik

So what's the easiest way we homeschooling moms can teach our kiddos how to read, write and do their arithmetic?

Actually its very simple! YEAH!

Get them excited to learn.

"What? How on earth do you do that?"

Wait, let me make it even more interesting...

Use money to get them excited to learn...AND it doesn't have to cost you a single cent!

"Wait a minute, you're telling me there is a way to get my kid excited to learn how to read and write and learn how to do their math, using money that won't cost me a single cent? HOW?"

Okay, let me show you how using my own two kiddos as our guinea pigs. :)

My daughter, Xanthe, has a learning disability known as Dyslexia (she also can only see out of one eye, just to make matters more interesting) and my son, Quinn, has a focus issue and just a plain old desire to simply not want to do anything at all that requires hard work. ;)

But they still needed to learn how to read, write and do their math, so how did I get them excited about it when they both were facing challenges that would normally make them run the other direction as fast as they could?

I brought money onto the scene.

Yup! And it wasn't my money either!

"No?"

Nope. It was their own money.

"Huh?"

Yup, I got them excited to want to learn how to read, write and do their arithmetic by first getting them excited to make their own money!

You see my son, Quinn, has wanted to have his own hotel ever since he was about 4 years old (we travelled a lot and stayed in a lot of hotels back then). So I used this desire to help him learn the 3 Rs and he never even suspected I was doing it!

Pretty clever right?

And my daughter wanted to help other kids learn how to cope with the loss of a pet, like she had. So again I used this mission to teach her the 3 Rs without her suspecting either!

I know, I'm good right? ;)

So how did I do it?
Here's a short video describing how to use Goal Setting with your kiddos:

"Teaching Children About Money Tip #01 - Goal Setting" video

First I used Goal Setting to get them really fired up about their dreams so I knew they would want to stick to them.

Then after they had their goals clearly planned out I got them to work on their goals, by researching how to get to their goals (reading), by writing out the exact details of their goals and creating their business plan of action to attain those goals (writing) and by figuring out the costs and the income their goals would cost to set up and in return would bring them in income (arithmetic).

I think you're getting the idea now, right?

"Yeah, what a cool idea! So how come they never knew they were learning their 3 Rs?"

Eazy Peazy! ;) - Yes, I am aware those are not proper spellings ;)

By putting the focus on achieving their goals, they did the reading, writing and arithmetic because they wanted to, not because they had to. During those sessions I was able to help them learn some phonics, spelling and grammar lessons as well as teach them how to manipulate their numbers.

But wait there's more!

"Really? That's already an awful lot, what else happened?"

They also learned about Geography and History; they learned project management and business skills as well as communication and listening skills. Their projects involved art classes (designing the hotel and the book to help kids learn how to cope with the loss of their pets) as well as so many other valuable life lessons!

And did I mention...it didn't cost me a single cent!

....and it actually made them money!

"Wow! That's really cool!"

I know right?

Anyway, I just wanted to share that with you, just in case you happened to have a child who doesn't like to do their 'school' work. Although, I'm sure I must be the only homeschooling parent who's ever run into that road block! ;)

In summary, by helping your child figure out a specific goal they would like to achieve you can teach them their 3 Rs by making the learning fun and personal to their own goals so it will never feel like a 'lesson'.

Here’s to your child’s success and enjoyment!
