In a sense, it feels like the school year just started, and yet we already have a full semester of academics now complete. As the first semester of schooling comes to an end, college application deadlines creep up on high school seniors. While many of the early college admission deadlines have already passed, regular admission deadlines range from November to May, depending on the college/university. And, thus we enter…APPLICATION CRUNCH TIME!!! If seniors have not already submitted their complete applications, now is the time to perfect final essays and give your applications one last review. It is almost always better to submit your applications early, when possible. The biggest benefit of doing that? Many times you will receive your admission decision a bit earlier in those cases. Why wait to hear of your acceptance in March or April when you can receive that decision in January instead?
A few things to keep in mind as you are completing your applications:
1) Go through your final college application list…make sure you would be happy going to any of the schools on that list. If not, don’t waste your time applying or paying the (up to-) $100 application fee.
2) Read through everything more than once. Have someone else read through it, too. You do NOT want small grammatical or spelling errors to be the reason your application stands out.
3) Avoid repetition...you want every piece of your application to divulge different information about you as an individual.
4) Don’t wait until the last minute! Use your time wisely and hit submit well-BEFORE the application deadline.
5) Make sure you have completed ALL pieces of the application: essays, supplements, recommendation letters, portfolios, activities lists, SAT Subject tests, etc.
Above all else, be yourself and put the best version of you on your applications. Best of luck to you all!
Meggan Mattson and Mike Deutsch, both former high school counselors, created College Fit Counseling, LLC to help students and families navigate the college search and selection process. They assist with all pieces of the process: from creating a college list of “good fit” schools, through college applications and essays, and into applying for financial aid and scholarships.
