Dyslexia: Not an Attitude Problem
by Dr. Phyllis Books, DC

Many parents, teachers, and health professionals believe a harmful myth that goes something like this: if my child’s performance is “on” one day and “off” the next, it’s probably an attitude problem and not a learning problem. This myth is so pervasive that it’s a widespread belief.
If your child has dyslexia, nothing could be further from the truth.

This belief is completely understandable, because the dyslexia puzzle can be confusing and trying. When your child could do a multiplication problem ten minutes ago but can’t do it now, it seems like she has an attitude. It’s frustrating to you, it’s frustrating to your child’s teacher, and it’s especially frustrating for your child, who has no idea why she can’t do the problem. That’s scary for her, and that fear worsens if her parents and teachers believe she’s being uncooperative or difficult.

Let me be clear: this is a neurological issue that is not behavioral in nature. However, it can become behavioral if you or the teacher doesn’t understand what’s going on. Normally, the information from the left side of the body is processed by the right side of the brain, and vice versa. But sometimes the switchover doesn’t work correctly. So the information sometimes goes to the side of the brain it should, the opposite side, and sometimes it goes to the wrong side of the brain, the same side.

What this means is that the information may go to the correct side of the brain to be processed, or it may not—and the same information might be switched correctly one time and not be switched the next. If it isn’t, your child can’t access it, even if she could a short time earlier. Just like a train that’s not switched to the right track, the information can be derailed. The good news is that this switchover is very correctable with Books Neural Therapy™.

Incorrect switching is just one of many possible factors in your child’s dyslexia, and it may take time to find out what is going on. While the dyslexia puzzle can be confusing, it can be put together. However, addressing one factor without addressing the rest will not resolve the issues, and will lead to continued frustration and disappointment. When you work with a practitioner who reverses dyslexia naturally, he or she will look at the total picture that is your child and discover all the factors that contribute to her dyslexia.
