Do You Believe Any of These Myths about Dyslexia?
by Dr. Phyllis Books, DC

In my work of reversing dyslexia naturally, I hear many myths and misconceptions about dyslexia. Here are three of the most common.

MYTH: There’s no difference in how children learn. They all do it the same way.

TRUTH:  We all learn differently, and ignorance of this is a factor in why so many children are labeled as learning challenged. We all have a primary learning style, which can be visual (by seeing), auditory (by hearing), or kinesthetic (by doing)?

Your child’s personality is also a factor. Is he or she an extrovert (outgoing, likes to be around people) or an introvert (shyer, enjoying plenty of alone time)? When you know how your child best learns, you can tailor your lessons and teaching style to best match that learning style.

Every child I’ve ever met wants to do his or her best, but in order to allow the best to shine through, he or she needs to be able to learn in the preferred manner. Everything you can do to cater to that means you’ll have a happier child who loves to learn.

MYTH:  The supposed “link” between nutrition and learning is nonsense, according to my doctor. Sugar and processed foods are a not a problem for my child or anyone else.

TRUTH:  During medical school, most doctors (MDs) have very little nutritional training—at most, one to three hours. Most are simply not aware of the role good, wholesome food plays in the development of the brain.

On the other hand, nutritionists, chiropractors, and naturopaths study nutrition much more extensively and can provide plenty of scientific evidence that illustrates this fact. There is indeed a strong link between what a child eats and how the brain responds.

MYTH: Your child might grow out of learning challenges such as dyslexia.

TRUTH: Many professionals in the medical and education professions give parents a pat answer of “he’ll grow out of it.” That isn’t often the case without intervention, and it doesn’t help your current situation. Your child has been learning since he or she was born, and every day is precious learning time lost.

Your child is too important to leave to the chance he or she might grow out of it. And more importantly, listen to your intuition. What does it say? Does your gut tell you that your son or daughter will grow out of the learning problem? Always remember that your gut instincts are much more important and reliable than what any professional says.
