You can start helping your children with their college application essays as early as 8th grade.
Buy a spiral notebook and designate it just for ideas. Whenever something of interest happens, encourage your children to jot it down. Getting a splinter before hiking? Finding a dime in the street? Went on a trip? Built a sand castle? Take a swim in the ocean? Start a nonprofit? Work at a soup kitchen? Death of a loved one? Coach a Little League Team? ANY topic counts and matters. Then have them start from the back of the notebook and create lists of adjectives to describe themselves. Colleges want to see into your children’s minds and hearts and learn more about who they are not just what they do. Bingo! With these two lists, your children can start forming an essay about themselves. If they start in 8th or 9th grade it is easier for them. But, by no means, is it too late to start today.
