Any time that you speak with your kid you can convey the message in a affirmative or a pessimistic way.
Guess which way is more likely to gain your kid’s cooperation, bring them closer to you and raise their self-respect?
The affirmative way, of course. Yet, too often mothers and fathers draw attention to pessimistic behaviors while affirmative steps go unnoticed.
Let’s look at three changes you can make.
1. Use affirmative conversation.
Instead of the pessimistic:
“Haven’t you gotten your toys picked up yet? I can’t believe that you’re so slow! I asked you 10 minutes ago to clean up!”
Use the affirmative:
“I see that you got the Legos cleaned up. Good job! I’ll set the timer for 5 minutes and let’s see if you can get the rest of the toys cleaned up!”
2. Use rewards rather than punishments.
Instead of the pessimistic:
“No stories tonight! I had to keep pestering you to get ready for bed.”
Use the affirmative:
“If you brush your teeth and put jammies on, without me asking tonight, you’ll get an extra book.”
3. Give affirmative attention for affirmative actions.
Instead of the pessimistic:
“If you can’t share, I’m taking this toy away.”
Use the affirmative:
“You’re doing an amazing job sharing with your brother right now! High five!”
The motto we should use in our parenting is this: “Catch them being good!”

P.S. Remember our words are “Magical”. How we talk to our kids will determine how they react to their world. One of the most important skills to show our kids, if we want them to grow up with a Healthy Wealth Mentality, is to first give them an affirmative “word” foundation.
